I Love Wine Because…

Recently I’ve thought about why I really love the wine business and I’ve come up with the following list…(in random order)

  • There is endless possibilities to learn new things
    • What grape variety does well in Brazil?
  • There’s always some new winemaking or viticultural technique to try
    • A new yeast you say?? Don’t mind if I do…
  • It’s fun to share a great bottle of wine for the discussion factor.
    • A bottle of 2004 Dominus in a Restaurant ~$250, Meals for 10 people~$?, Fun new discussions about the wine~ PRICELESS!
  • It’s exciting to try new varieties
    • If you haven’t tried Traminette yet, you need to!
  • Pinot Noir will always taste different when grown in different places and that’s really cool.
    • Ditto for Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon…Well, just about any variety.
  • You get to work with great people in the industry who always bring something new and interesting to the table.
    • Sometimes it’s an idea, sometimes it’s wine!
  • No matter how many vintages you work through no two are exactly alike and there is always a new challenge to meet.
    • We’ll see what 2010 brings us!
  • There are some great wine related quotes from just about every era in history
    • “In victory you deserve Champagne. In defeat you need it!” – Napoleon, Great quote and so true!
  • Wine is a product that requires the maker to know a little bit about every other main discipline.
    • Art, Horticulture, Entomology, Ecology, Meteorology, Microbiology, Forestry, Chemistry, Soil Science, Plant Physiology, Marketing, Sales, Advertising, Glass Production, Transportation, Business… I’m sure there’s more but that’s a rough list.
  • It’s a great conversation starter
    • I know you’ve all been to a party where you know next to no one and need to find something to talk about besides the weather…And most everyone will chat about wine.

This is just a short list for me but feel free to add your own reasons why you love wine in the comments section below!
